Joe's Fishing Tips - Grouper
The predominate species in our area are the red grouper and the gag grouper. Of these two, the gag is perhaps the most sought after and certainly the most abundant in Gulf waters. The baits for taking grouper vary according to angler preference. In general, when fishing for them offshore there are two prevalent techniques: bottom fishing and trolling deep-diving plugs.

The gag grouper minimum size for recreational anglers, in both state and federal waters, is 22 inches. For red grouper the minimum size is 20 inches. If a fish is under the minimum size, it must be released.

Most seasoned grouper fishermen know that grouper are found near structures. What most people don't realize is that the structure does not have to be a pile of rocks or other protrusion. Any bottom structure, however flat, with surface cracks and crevices is likely to produce fish. Fishermen should familiarize themselves with whatever bottom machine they are using and learn to detect these hard bottom areas. On color fish finders they usually show up as bright red or orange. On black and white machines they usually appear as solid black.
